Vienna, the capital of Austria, is a city with a high quality of life and it is also one of the pioneers of Europe in the “Open Government Data” (OGD) sector. In fact, starting from 2011, local government data and services are made available to the public not only to ensure greater transparency, but above all to obtain the participation and cooperation of the local population and the business and scientific communities.
Among the areas in which Vienna excels are worth mentioning in particular:
Recycling and composting programs - 30% of the city's energy needs are met by renewable sources.
Public transport (metro, tram, bus) - the public transport network is very well developed and efficiently covers the entire city area. Furthermore, to improve urban mobility, the Technical University of Graz and the Technical University of Vienna have developed a system of intelligent traffic lights, which is currently being tested. This system has the particular characteristic of detecting if an individual is about to cross the road or if he accidentally finds himself in front of a traffic light. In the first hypothesis, the informations that the GPS systems receive are used to warn the drivers about the speed to keep. Another idea is to equip traffic lights with sensors that provide data on atmospheric conditions and the environment.
Parks and recreation areas - half of the city is green area.
